A guide to the companion of a loved one with cancer: Everything you need to know

Cancer affects not only the sick person, but also to the person who takes care of her, as well as to the loved ones closest to you.

The person that takes care of the patient in the home is referred to as “caregiver” or “caregiver”, and without a doubt, is a key piece in the care of the patient. This surely you have heard endless times right? but what you're really aware of these words and the importance of your role?

In many cases, a person will be the chosen one to primarily take care of a patient. Often it is the partner or adult child. Sometimes you can be a close friend, who will help especially when no family member is available.

What is certain is that the person in charge of the care of the patient helps to deal with the sadness and the emotional impact of knowing that your loved one has cancer. Allows you to display your love and respect, and of course, it makes him feel good to be useful and required.

All of the above is important when it comes to the care of others, but what about the self-care when you are companion?

One of the first self-care measures for a companion is to know get help and to have space to talk about what it feels like and the emotional burdens that can mean to accompany a loved one with cancer.

The humor can sometimes be the best medicine. Be sensitive to the moments in which your loved one you need to express your pain, but be ready to laugh also.

6 Advice that you may need to read

For all of the above, today we want to share this guide with some tips that will help you take care of your own needs and feelings, to be able to accompany others:

1. Plan to do some of the things that you enjoy. Remember that there are three types of activities you need to do:
– Those that involve other people, such as going to lunch with a friend.
– Those that give you the sense of achievement, such as exercising or complete a project.
– Those that make you feel good or relaxed(a), as a comedy show or a walk.

2. Make an effort to keep you up to date on what is happening in the “real life”, that is to say, the world is not cancer-related. Watch the news. Take the time to read the newspaper in the morning. During the day, for example in the food, take the time to not talking about the disease.

3. Consider joining a support group for caregivers or visit a counselor / therapist if you need help to deal with various issues, such as financial problems, stress, and depression. Do not try to do it all alone. Looking for help from other people. Involve them in your life and in the things that have to do.

You can come to us. In MORIVIVI we are a support group for patients and families, where we are dedicated to be "patient navigators", and offer support throughout all the way.

4. Set limits (you can help yourself and the person you're caring for). The person you care about can exercise a degree of independence while you take a breather. It is important that you recognize that you need a “break” or rest to not feel exhausted.

5. It is vital to have a escape to your own thoughts and feelings. Think of something that might cheer you up. Can help lighten your load if you talk to others? Do you or would you prefer to have a quiet time just for you? Perhaps you need two things, depending on what is happening in your life. It can help you a lot if you and the others know what you need.

6. I know a collector of information. Investigate and have info seems to relieve some of the anxiety experienced by people with cancer and, sometimes, even you can make a difference in the results.

It is important that you help the person you care for to maintain a sense of control. The diagnosis of cancer can make you feel that you have little control over your life.

Of whom be thou ware for after care/a good

No matter how hard we put ourselves in the shoes of a person with cancer, it is helpful to listen to the thoughts, desires, and expectations shared by people who actually have traveled this difficult road.

And remember to eat healthy, try to get enough sleep and maintain a balance in your own life, you will help provide the ideal support that your loved one needs.

Please note that currently, a high number of cases of cancer are overcome with early detection and proper treatment, but even so, we know that the pursuit of healing requires time, effort, self-control, and empathy of the affections.

Never forget that those who suffer from living in a defining moment in your life, and you need to listen, help, and containment. Your presence in times simple is going to be critical, without leaving aside that this role should not be central, but secondary: a place from which you can collaborate by making it all a little more bearable.

And we know that you do. So thank you for giving it your best each and every day!
